Dolphin Diaries: Go with the Flow

zzzzzzzzzFlowing with Friends

Beto accompanied me to Hawaii for a long weekend, and on the first morning we were scheduled to go on a dolphin snorkeling charter with Captain Veto (Into Spirit Whale & Dolphin Adventures). We arrived at Honokohau Harbor prior to our early morning departure, and when Beto got out of the car I could hear him greeting someone with a distinctive voice… who turned out to be my dear friend Celeste! The last time I had seen her was in Sept 2009, on a humpback whale trip to Tonga that she had organized.  Celeste was going to be on our charter, with 2 out-of-town guests.

Sychronicity in action

During the Tonga adventure, Celeste suggested that I connect with a good friend of hers who lives in Monterey and hosts a talk show on spirituality. Although I live literally 5 minutes from Monterey, I had yet to make this connection. Well, the Universe must have insisted that we meet… because Celeste’s guests for the dolphin charter were Monterey friends (talk show host) Sheila Gale and her lovely daughter Natasha! I was able to meet and share a wonderful dolphin connection with them! Celeste & I have a magical bond… by now it is commonplace for us to bump into each other in joyful, powerful, & synchronistic circumstances.  This time was no exception!

The Power of Patience

We all jumped on the boat and headed north, in the hope of finding dolphins willing to spend time with us in the water. Evidently the southern bays had been quiet for several days, with no dolphin encounters. We crossed our fingers and enjoyed sunny skies & calm seas as we journeyed north along the coast.

Captain Veto drove further north than I have ever been (on his boat) without seeing a single wiggling fin. We remained hopeful… and finally, our patience paid off. We came across a large pod of spinner dolphins swimming in the same direction as our boat. They were moving fast and were gorgeous to watch as they zigged & zagged on either side of the boat and happily jumped & surfed in the wake.

Grace in Motion

We rapidly donned our snorkeling gear, with the intention of jumping in to watch the 100+ dolphins swim by us on their northward journey. We knew there would be no way to keep up with them, but by swimming parallel and in the same direction we were able to appreciate glimpses of dolphins as they glided past in small & larger groupings. Since the pod was so big, we were able to stay in the water for at least 20 minutes as more & more dolphins continued to serenade us as they sped by with effortless grace.

We were surrounded– everywhere we looked there were glistening dolphins flying under the water. Occasionally they would spontaneously jump, spin, and splash back down into the accepting arms of the sea. At times we were able to swim in tandem with them, as the gentle dolphins allowed us to temporarily blend with their pod.

There were many babies and juveniles in the group, and we watched as they learned to pace themselves with their mommas. They frequently tested their spinning abilities in front of a most appreciative audience consisting of their mommas and our human cheering section.

When the entire pod had swam past, we would get back on the boat, motor towards the front of the group, then enter the water again for more fluid dolphin encounters. We did this several times as the pod made its way north… then they turned & began moving south– at the same rapid but relaxed pace. We hop-scotched our way home along the coast with the fluid momentum of the pod.

It’s all about Flow

The theme for the day was ‘go with the flow’. We were in the flowing field of ‘dolphins on the move’ energy all morning. We were blessed to engage them in a few precious intimate dolphin encounters… swimming eye-to-eye within the smaller groupings, and experiencing the mutual love that exists between respectful, sentient beings.

Beto had a magnificent time, and was able to catch a lovely moment on a little underwater ‘Hero-cam’ he was testing. We put the video clip to music, and hope you enjoy it! We were delighted to share this flowing day with Celeste, Sheila, and Natasha! A dolphin-heart connection was made, which is now part of a precious and shared memory.

Namaste from the Big Island.
